Sited within a wooded environment near Kaiserslautern, the building’s design strategy strongly emphasizes its connection to nature. From the outset the project sought to align the demands of a high-performance medical facility—serving both injured warriors and regional civilian patients—with the therapeutic value of landscape, daylight, and orientation.
The campus is organized around three curvilinear forms on a radial podium—this geometry expresses both a human-scale approach and a clear organizational logic. The arrangement supports two primary care paths:
-
one dedicated to the rapid-cycle trauma/wounded-warrior cases arriving from the flight line,
-
another servicing outpatient clinics, routine procedures and in-patient care for the broader regional community. Archiscene
This dual-path strategy influences how arrival, triage and patient flow are conceived: the design distinguishes high-acuteness flows from the day-to-day care functions without compromising overall campus coherence.
A signature design move is the patterned façade derived from the abstracted image of surrounding trees—a lace-like skin that softens the building’s mass and reinforces its connection to the forest landscape.
Visually and physically, the project establishes strong links between interior spaces and external green spaces: courtyards, vegetated rooftops, dining terraces and a chapel garden punctuate the campus, offering both retreat and orientation.
