UGANDA NURSING SCHOOL

The HIINGA School of Nursing represents a bold investment in Uganda’s healthcare future—an environment where education, community, and compassion converge. Conceived by HIINGA, the new campus provides a state-of-the-art home for 400 nursing students who both learn and live within the same architectural ecosystem. The project redefines the notion of a nursing school in Africa—not only as an academic institution but as a living, breathing community that fosters care, equity, and resilience.
Located in Kampala’s evolving urban landscape, the School of Nursing sits at the intersection of health, education, and civic life. The campus embraces the city’s dynamic energy while opening itself to the surrounding community and hospital.
Its design celebrates Uganda’s natural beauty—responding to local climate, vegetation, and topography through a composition of a terraced courtyard and shaded verandas that frame distant views beyond. The building’s massing conceived as two wings with a center courtyard/atrium is tuned to Kampala’s equatorial sun, capturing daylight while maintaining comfort through natural ventilation and deep overhangs.
The architecture is inspired by the values of care and connection—principles at the heart of both nursing and place-making. The design is organized around a central “learning courtyard” that links teaching spaces, laboratories, and residences, punctuated by open, yet screened walkways that foster dialogue and reflection. Materials such as local brick, stone, and timber express both permanence and warmth, while perforated shading screens filter sunlight and create a rhythmic interplay of light and shadow that animates the daily experience of students and faculty.
